These hot honey salmon bowls are the easy weeknight dinner that comes together in under 20 minutes. Cubed salmon gets tossed in a homemade hot honey, crisps up in the air fryer in 7 minutes, and gets served over rice with a creamy mango-avocado salsa to balance the heat. Naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

This isn't Orange Chicken

Here's the thing about hot honey salmon: it should taste more hot than sweet. The honey is there for a touch of sweetness, not to be the headliner. The red pepper flakes are the headliner. If you want a sweet glaze, this isn't your recipe.

A woman with long red hair, wearing a brown sweater and jeans, smiles while standing in a modern kitchen beside a counter with fresh lettuce and hibachi steak bowls. Marble backsplash and gold kitchen accents are visible in the background.

Not to boast BUT I nailed this recipe on the first try, which almost never happens. I made it for dinner one random night and my husband called it "phenomenal" before he was even halfway through the bowl. It's now in our weeknight rotation, and I think it'll be in yours too!

Hot Honey Salmon Bowl Ingredients

  • Honey - use high quality pure honey.
  • Hot sauce - I usually go for medium heat but adjust down to a mild or even hotter to a spicy for more heat.
  • Sesame oil - provides a subtle nutty taste. A bland olive oil or lightly flavored oil will work as well.
  • Salmon - Atlantic salmon is what I used in this recipe, but sockeye or king salmon will work as well. Skinless salmon makes things easy, but you can quickly remove the skin if needed with a sharp knife.
  • Mango - Pick one that gives just slightly when you squeeze it gently.
  • Avocado - Like the mango, make sure it's ripe and soft (just not mushy).

Things I Want You to Know

  1. The 7-minute air-fry timing is dialed in. I already perfected this technique on my Air Fryer Teriyaki Salmon Bites. We use the same temperature, same timing, same single-layer-with-space rule. Don't second-guess it.
  2. If you're making this for kids, cut the red pepper flakes in half. The full ¼ teaspoon is a real warm-mouth bite, exactly right for my husband, probably too much for younger taste buds. The hot sauce itself stays.
  3. Why the air fryer over the oven: no preheat, no sheet pan to scrub, and you get crispy caramelized edges every single time. I'd genuinely choose air fryer for this even if oven space was free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How spicy is this?

Real warm-mouth-bite spicy with the full ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes. Cut the pepper flakes in half for a kid-friendly version, or add an extra pinch if you want it hotter. You can also use a milder or hotter hot sauce to adjust the heat level.

Can I make this without an air fryer?

Yes, bake on a parchment-lined sheet pan at 425°F for 10-12 minutes, until the salmon flakes easily. Honestly though, the air fryer is the move here. Crispy edges, faster, less cleanup.

Can I use a different fruit?

Pineapple works, but it skews the bowl sweeter so you may want a more hot honey sauce to pair with it.
