These Chocolate Pudding Dirt Cups are my grown-up spin on the classic dirt dessert cups we all loved as kids — but make them dairy-free and a little fancier 💁🏼‍♀️. Each one has a silky layer of coconut milk chocolate pudding (similar to my popular chocolate mousse), topped with crushed gluten-free Simple Mills cookies that mimic “dirt,” and of course, a gummy worm or two. Think of them as fancy dirt cups — a nostalgic treat for adults who still appreciate a little childhood joy.

Nostalgia in a bite!

I grew up a diehard dirt sundae fan. Our local ice cream shop made them with crushed Oreos, gummy worms, and hot fudge — and you got to pick your own ice cream flavor (chocolate was the only right answer).

A woman with long red hair, wearing a brown sweater and jeans, smiles while standing in a modern kitchen beside a counter with fresh lettuce and hibachi steak bowls. Marble backsplash and gold kitchen accents are visible in the background.

This recipe started as a craving for that good old dirt sundae, but I decided to make it a little more adult-friendly with a decadent, dairy-free chocolate pudding. It couldn’t be easier to make — just melt chocolate chips into coconut milk for a luxuriously smooth, silky pudding. The assembly is just as fun as eating it: a layer of crushed chocolate cookies, a gummy worm or two, and you’ve got yourself a nostalgic chocolate treat!

A person sits cross-legged in a meditation pose with their hands resting on their knees, peacefully imagining delicious hibachi steak bowls. The simple black outline contrasts against a white background.

If you’re in a nostalgic baking mood, you’ve got to try my chewy peanut-butter-chocolate scotcharoo bars next, and my funfetti rice krispie treats always bring a smile. And honestly, my homemade animal crackers make me feel like I’m right back at snack time in grade school.

Dirt Pudding Ingredients

This pudding couldn’t be easier to make - and there is no instant pudding mix in sight! Just melt some dark chocolate chips (my go-to) with full-fat coconut milk for that luscious, creamy base. Don’t worry, it won’t taste like coconut. The full-fat version is key here, so grab the can with that thick cream layer on top.

A spoonful of arrowroot starch helps the pudding set perfectly, while a splash of vanilla extract smooths out the rich chocolate flavor.

And of course, it’s not a dirt cup without the “dirt” and “worms!” I topped mine with crushed chocolate sandwich cookies and mini gummy worms for that playful, nostalgic finish.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Chilling Time: 3 hours
Total Time: 3 hours 15 minutes
Servings: 4 cups
Calories: 490kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup chocolate chips - I prefer dark but milk or semi-sweet works too
  • 1 cup coconut milk - full fat
  • ½ tablespoon arrowroot starch - or cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 chocolate sandwich cookies - crushed, I used Simple Mills
  • 4 - 8 gummy worms - I used mini worms

Instructions

  • Make the pudding mixture by heating the chocolate chips and coconut milk in a saucepan on the stove over medium low heat. Stir consistently until smooth and glossy.
1 cup chocolate chips, 1 cup coconut milk
  • Remove the pan from the heat. In a separate small bowl, mix together a spoonful of the chocolate mixture and arrowroot starch until well combined (this creates a "slurry"). Add the "slurry" to the pot with the melted chocolate along with the vanilla extract. Stir well to combine. You should notice the pudding mixture start to thicken up a bit.
½ tablespoon arrowroot starch, 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Divide the pudding into 4 jars. Place plastic wrap over each one, pressing the plastic down on top of the pudding. Store in the fridge for at least 3 hours to chill.
  • Once chilled, assemble the dirt pudding by sprinkling some crushed chocolate sandwich cookies over top and finishing it off with a couple of gummy worms for good measure.
    8 chocolate sandwich cookies, 4 - 8 gummy worms
