What is Frozen Mexican Hot Chocolate?

Great question! Mexican hot chocolate is a well known beverage typically served warm. It contains Mexican chocolate which is where it gets its name from. Mexican chocolate is not your average chocolate - it has a little spiciness to it from a blend of different spices like cinnamon, all spice, or maybe even some cayenne pepper. It may sound out of the ordinary if you haven't tried it but trust me, it's incredible!

Now onto the frozen piece. You see, hot chocolate is one of my all time favorite things to sip on when it's cold out (next to this maple sea salt latte of course). Now that it's scalding hot outside, a warm beverage isn't really on my mind. But a frozen version of one of my favorite drinks, now that I can get behind! And thus we created the frozen mexican hot chocolate. It makes for the perfect chocolaty treat for hot summer days!

Let's Make Frozen Mexican Hot Chocolate!

  1. Start by melting the dark chocolate (you can also use real mexican chocolate like this one). I like to do this in a skillet placed on top of a small pot of simmering water. The steam from the pot will melt the chocolate slowly and without fear of burning. Remove from heat and let the chocolate cool to a lukewarm temperature.
  2. Next, stir in the nut milk and coconut sugar and stir until well blended. Fold in the cacao powder, vanilla, espresso, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and sea salt and mix until smooth. Pour the mixture into a bowl and place in the fridge for about 10 minutes until cool.
  3. In a blender, add the chocolate mixture and ice and blend until creamy. Pour into glasses and top with coconut whipped cream and a sprinkle of chopped chocolate and cayenne pepper if desired.
