Why Homemade Taco Seasoning is Better than Store-bought
- No additives - you'll notice this recipe only requires a few simple spices, no gums or stabilizers or words you can't pronounce!
- Versatility - you can adjust each spice to your preference. For example, if you want more hot blend, use more cayenne pepper. If you want a sweeter blend, use more cinnamon.
- Easy to store - most taco seasonings from the store come in a paper packet making it hard to store. When you make it at home you can use your own spice jar to keep it airtight for up to 6 months!
What spices are in taco seasoning?

- Chili powder - a blend of a variety of chilis in powder form. The spiciness will depend on the brand.
- Paprika - I use this spice in many dishes as it offers a light earthy flavor. You can used smoked paprika for a spicier flavor.
- Cumin - this is a complex spice that is found in most taco-style dishes. It provides an earthy nutty flavor with a subtle sweetness.
- Garlic powder - adds a hint of garlic flavor to anything without needing to mince up garlic cloves.
- Onion powder - adds a hint of onion flavor really easily!
- Cayenne pepper - a little goes a long way. If you prefer a spicer taco seasoning, add an extra ⅛ teaspoon until you achieve your desired flavor.
- Oregano - a little bit is used to provide a fresh herb flavor.
- Cinnamon - this is my secret ingredient I like to throw in most taco dishes. A Mexican cinnamon is best if you can find it!
