Learn how to make homemade healthy tzatziki sauce with dill to add refreshing, savory flavor and a creamy texture to all your favorite meals! Made with less than ten ingredients, it’s ready in minutes and great to prepare in advance.
What is Tzatziki Sauce?
Tzatziki is a type of creamy yogurt dip made with a handful of ingredients including yogurt, cucumber, garlic, and fresh herbs. Traditional recipes are made with sheep or goat’s milk yogurt, but this homemade version uses Greek yogurt for a similar taste and texture.
A common condiment in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, tzatziki is vibrant, refreshing, and easy to make at home! All you have to do is combine the ingredients, and enjoy!
In fact, this homemade tzatziki recipe is so simple that it’s ready in ten minutes or less. I love to keep a big batch on hand for dipping with appetizers or snacks. However, it’s also a great way to add flavor to all your favorite meals. You’ll never go back to store-bought versions again!

Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients and Notes
- Cucumber - I recommend using English cucumbers, but any type of cucumber will work for this recipe. There’s no need to peel and deseed the cucumber as the large seeds and pieces of skin won’t get into the middle of the grater!
- Yogurt - This forms the base of the sauce. Make sure to use plain flavored, and opt for full-fat varieties for the richest taste and creamiest texture.
- Lemon juice - This adds brightness, balancing out some of the heaviness of the fats. Freshly squeezed is best!
- Olive oil - Choose a high-quality oil that you love the taste of. This helps create a smooth, creamy sauce and adds a rich taste.
- Garlic - Use three cloves of garlic, and mince them finely.
- Fresh Dill - This adds a refreshing, almost citrusy flavor that balances out the rest of the ingredients.

This is an overview with step-by-step photos. Full ingredients & instructions are in the recipe card below.
Step 1: Prepare the cucumber. Use the large holes in a box grater to grate the cucumber on a cutting board. Then, spoon the part in the middle of the grates into a bowl with a towel. Gently press the water out of the grated cucumber, and set it aside.
Step 2: Combine the ingredients. Add all the ingredients except the cucumber to a bowl, and gently stir to combine. Then, fold the cucumber into the mixture, distributing it evenly.
Step 3: Serve. Enjoy your healthy tzatziki right away, or chill it in the fridge for later!
What Do You Eat Tzatziki With?
I love to serve this tzatziki sauce with dill in a bowl with crackers, veggies, or pita for dipping. However, it also tastes incredible when paired with main courses like Greek nachos, Greek chicken meatballs, pita pockets, or grain bowls!
How to Store
Store leftover tzatziki sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. I don’t recommend freezing this recipe as the dairy won’t thaw well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Tzatziki is cool and creamy with a tangy, garlicky flavor.
Of course, this depends on your definition of healthy. However, this tzatziki sauce is higher in protein and lower in fat than sour cream, which makes it a healthier option in my eyes.
The most common cause of bitterness is using too much lemon juice. Be sure to measure carefully, and start small, adding a little at a time.
