What is a Smash Cocktail?

Given that they come in all types of varieties like my pumpkin bourbon smash, smoked cinnamon apple cider bourbon smash, and this peach bourbon cocktail, there’s not exactly a definitive definition for a smash cocktail. However, they typically contain a combination of spirits, simple syrup, herbs, fruit, ice, and water.

As the name suggests, the ingredients are mixed or “smashed” together to form a cohesive drink. Most often, smash cocktails are made with whiskey, gin, rum, or vodka. Then, they're served over ice cubes with garnishes like mint leaves or fruit wedges.

Peach Bourbon Cocktail Ingredients and Notes

Bourbon peach lemonade ingredients on a pan with labels.
  • Lemonade - Use homemade or your favorite store-bought yellow lemonade.
  • Frozen Peaches - I like to take advantage of fresh peaches and freeze them when in season. However, packaged frozen peach slices from the frozen section of your grocery store will also work.
  • Bourbon - Use high-quality bourbon like Bulleit or Knob Creek.
  • Ginger Beer - This gives the bourbon peach smash a bubbly fizz and adds a crisp ginger flavor. Feel free to substitute ginger ale if preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a pitcher of bourbon peach smash?

Sure! Just double the ingredients, and transfer them to a pitcher to serve. Work in batches as needed, depending on the size of your blender.

Can I use a different fruit?

Yes, because the ingredients are so simple, you can swap the peaches for practically any frozen fruit. Frozen blueberries would be amazing, and frozen strawberries would make for a pop of red color!

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

This bourbon lemonade is best served right away. However, if needed, you can prepare a batch, and store it in a pitcher or jar in the fridge for 1-2 days. I recommend straining the cocktail if you plan on storing it. Otherwise, it may become watery!
