This homemade agave margarita recipe comes together with just four simple ingredients in minutes - no margarita mix required. Perfectly sweet, it’s given a boost of fizz with sparkling water for a restaurant-quality cocktail from the comfort of your own home!
The Best Homemade Margarita Recipe with Agave
I love a good margarita from time to time, especially when the weather gets warm. However, instead of going out, I usually prefer to make them at home.
And with my go-to homemade margarita recipe, they never disappoint. Quick and easy, it uses just four simple ingredients and requires no triple sec. Instead, I opt for agave to cut down on the alcohol and add a hint of sweetness for a fairly skinny margarita.
Then, I top it off with a splash of Topo Chico, which adds a little fizziness that elevates the lime. Pair it with shrimp baja tacos, and you can't go wrong!

Agave Margarita Recipe Ingredients and Notes
- Tequila - It wouldn't be a margarita without tequila! Use a high-quality blanco tequila if you can. Or, I actually prefer to use mezcal. It has this rich, smoky flavor that is absolutely delicious in a cocktail. It adds another flavor element without you having to do much of anything and is easy to find at most liquor stores.
- Lime juice - Freshly squeezed lime juice is best! Use a citrus juicer to get the most out of your limes.
- Agave syrup - Agave nectar has a light sweet taste that pairs perfectly with the tartness of the limes without being overbearing. You can substitute with maple syrup or simple syrup if needed.
- Topo Chico - My secret ingredient for an elevated margarita recipe, this adds fizziness that enhances the flavor of the lime. I love to use flavored varieties, or opt for your favorite sparkling water.

Step 3: Serve. Add a large ice cube to a margarita glass, and pour the liquid over the ice. Top with lime wedges, and enjoy your margarita on the rocks!
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. Just multiply the ingredients as needed, stirring them in a pitcher. Then, pour the drink mixture into glasses, dividing it evenly.
Although there are endless variations, classic margarita recipes feature tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice.
Triple sec adds a citrus flavor and lots of sweetness that balances out the acidity of the limes. However, it has quite a bit of sugar. So, I much prefer to swap it out with agave.
Margaritas are best served right away. However, if you want to prepare in advance, you can store the mixture without ice in the fridge for up to 3 days. Give it a good stir before serving, and enjoy it over ice.
