Healthy banana bread with oat flour is soft, subtly sweet, and studded with melty chocolate chips in every bite. Made with minimal prep time, it’s great to keep on hand for quick breakfasts, snacks, or desserts!
Healthy Banana Bread with Oat Flour
One taste of this chocolate chip oat banana bread, and you’ll never go back to regular versions again! Not your average recipe, this banana bread is a combination of my gluten free banana bread and my Pinterest viral oat flour pancakes.
It’s soft, moist, and made with a subtle sweetness that resembles oatmeal cookie dough. Plus, it’s made with minimal prep time, allowing the oven to do all the hard work.
What could be better than that? I like to make a batch at the beginning of the week to keep on hand. However, if I’m being honest, it never lasts more than a couple of days. So, you might just want to go ahead and make a double batch!

What Makes this Oat Flour Banana Bread Healthy?
Of course, what is considered to be healthy will look a little different for everyone. However, when compared to your standard banana bread recipes, this version is lower in sugar, higher in protein, gluten free, and dairy free friendly. That makes it a healthy option in my book!
Oat Flour Banana Bread Ingredients
- Overripe Bananas - Slightly brown and soft is best. Try to avoid using green/light yellow bananas as they will be a little stiff and won't provide the moisture needed.
- Eggs - These provide structure to the bread, helping it hold its shape. I haven't tested this recipe with vegan egg substitutes, and can't guarantee the results if you do.
- Coconut sugar - Used to sweeten the batter, enhancing the banana flavor.
- Greek yogurt - This helps keep the bread moist while adding a boost of protein. Full-fat works best in this recipe. The FAGE brand is my favorite.
- Avocado oil - This is used in place of butter, adding a boost of healthy fats without impacting the flavor of the bread.
- Oat flour - The base of the batter, making this healthy banana bread gluten free. You can make your own by grinding gluten free quick oats into a powder. However, for the best results, I recommend buying it from the store.
- Chocolate chips - This adds little pockets of melty chocolate to every bite. Dark chocolate is my go-to, but semi-sweet chocolate will also taste great. This Enjoy Life brand is my go-to, but any chocolate chips or chunks will work in this recipe. Opt for dairy-free varieties if needed.
How to Make Banana Bread with Oat Flour
This is an overview with step-by-step photos. Full ingredients & instructions are in the recipe card below.
Step 1: Prepare the bananas. Use a fork to mash the bananas on a plate. You want them to be about 90% mashed with just a few chunks of banana left.
Step 2: Whisk the wet ingredients. Pour the mashed banana mixture into a large bowl. Then, add the remaining wet ingredients. Whis to incorporate.
Step 3: Add the dry ingredients. Fold in the oat flour, baking soda, and salt until the flour is 90% combined. Then, gently fold in the chocolate chips.
Step 4: Transfer the banana bread batter. Grease an 8-inch loaf pan, and line it with parchment paper. Then, pour the batter into the pan, and sprinkle a handful of chocolate chips on top.
Step 5: Bake the bread. Transfer the bread to a preheated oven, and bake until you can insert a toothpick into the center and it comes out clean.
Step 6: Cool. Allow the bread to cool slightly in the pan. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely, or serve while slightly warm!
Banana Bread Oat Flour Recipe Tips
- Use very ripe bananas. The browner they are, the easier they’ll be to mash and the sweeter your bread will be! If you don’t have ripe bananas, you can speed up the ripening process by baking them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 6-8 minutes or until the peel is dark brown.
- Allow your eggs to come to room temperature before you begin. This will allow them to mix easily, creating a smooth batter.
- Avoid overmixing the batter. Stir the ingredients just until no streaks remain. Continuing to mix will result in a dense, tough bread loaf.
- If you notice the bread is browning too quickly on top, cover the pan with foil, and continue to bake until the batter is cooked through.

Feel free to mix and match different add-ins to make this oat banana bread recipe your own! Some of my favorite additions include raisins, walnuts, pecans, blueberries, and cinnamon.
How to Store and Reheat
The best way to store this banana bread is in an airtight container in the fridge where it will keep for up to a week. Because it's made with natural ingredients, the coolness of the fridge will keep it the freshest. However, it will stay fresh left out on the counter in an airtight container for about 4 days as well.
Banana Bread Recipe with Oat Flour FAQs
The sugar in the bananas is released once baked and seeps into the bread as it rests, making it even sweeter the day after it’s baked.
I haven’t tested this recipe with different flour and don’t recommend it as oat flour bakes differently than other gluten free flour options.
Oat flour has a subtly sweet, toasty, slightly nutty taste.
Sure! To make oat flour banana bread muffins, prepare the batter as instructed in the recipe card below. Then, transfer it to a greased muffin tin, filling each muffin cavity about ⅔ of the way. Bake until the muffins are tall and a toothpick can be inserted into the center and comes out clean.

My favorite banana bread recipe! I used brown sugar as I had no coconut sugar. I added extra chocolate chips as suggested and also 1/4 cup of chopped walnuts on top. The rest of the recipe was followed as written. I must say it is delicious!
